IV16 SPEAKER: Vi An Diep
Vi An is a self-taught, independent world-music recording artist and intuitive improviser who specializes on long-plucked zither instruments from Vietnam, China and Japan. Vi An (pronounced ~ vee – an) who was born outside of Saigon, Vietnam, immigrated with her family to Calgary, Alberta at age 5. She first encountered the Chinese – zheng (jiun) long-plucked zither in Chinese summer school at age 6. At age 10, she produced her first full length album on cassette tape. This along with professional performance opportunities propelled her into a full-time career featuring her own brand of original instrumental, and electronic music! In 2006, Vi An with her musical colleagues in the Green Fool’s Theatre of Calgary, was nominated for and received the Betty Mitchell trophy for their production “Dancing On Water” in the category of best original music score and sound design for a new play. Vi An’s Green Fools production of Elephant Song in 2013 was also nominated for best original music and sound design for the Betty Mitchell’s award.
Vi An is currently based out of Vancouver and working on many exciting projects with many groups of creative collectives including the Mark Oliver Ensemble, which produces original live-musical scores to such silent films as “Sumurun”, “Genuine” and “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” Vi An also has a charming 4 piece ensemble featuring Chinese Pi’pa, Vietnamese dan bao, long-plucked zither and drums, percussion, dance and vocals, and she performs live every Tuesday evening at East is East Chai Restaurant on Main Street.
